The Geography of Westbury-sub-Mendip

Location

Westbury-sub-Mendip is a village in Somerset situated on the southern slopes of the Mendip Hills. It sits between Cheddar, approximately four miles to the West, and Wells, approximately four miles to the east, on the northern edge of the Somerset levels. The Mendip Hills are formed of carboniferous limestone and in the absence of significant rivers and streams, aquifer water supplied Westbury and other settlements along what is now the A371.

The village, part of which is situated in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has a small population: 813 people counted in the 2021 Census. The predominant activity of the area is agriculture.

The Strawberry Line

The Cheddar Valley Line, a Great Western Railway branch line running from Shepton Mallet to Clevedon, was known as the Strawberry Line, named for the fruit transported by rail from the strawberry fields of Cheddar.

The line has been used in the past as an airfield for light aircraft, but it is currently being converted to a cycle and footpath. The section linking Westbury and Easton is now fully open for both uses.

Westbury was served by Lodge Hill Station from 1870 to 1963.
